I had a great time between the first and eighth grades of school. This was because I could waste time in class, and still get good grades because of how easy everything was. Now? Not so much. My friends cry and complain about the physics syllabus but then get decent marks. On the other hand, I manage to look fairly calm and unconcerned but I was the only student whose marks the teacher did not say out aloud i.e. I scored poorly and she didn’t want to embarrass me.

Having ADHD means you’ve got a genuine reason for being unable to focus. Unfortunately, that isn’t an excuse to fail. Not working at school meant I had to do it at home. So, on a weekday, I would waste the first eight hours I spent at school and then have to do all the things that were taught during that time in about four hours when I was at home. On top of the time constraint, a major problem at hand is that it is even easier to get distracted when you’re in the comfort of your home.

Being able to move around freely and use my phone meant that it would be even harder to pay attention than in school. I was effectively doing nothing the entire day. My school performance got worse and my parents had to step in.

They had noticed my poor work ethic and become distrustful of me. As a result, they had to sit around me all the time so they could make sure I was studying. When they felt I wasn’t doing something properly or had gotten distracted they would get very upset and this would lead to a screaming match. The constant surveillance and animosity made things unpleasant and put a great deal of strain on our relationship.

They eventually came to understand that the issues at hand weren’t within my control and decided that one-on-one attention was the best way to make sure I got work done. In addition to getting a math tutor, my mother helped me with physics and chemistry, showing me videos and giving me notes to make the process easier.

ADHD can be fatal for your report card. Please take the right steps to ensure you manage to complete your syllabus whether this be closing off all distractions or getting a tutor to help you out.
